We’re committed to making Sutherland Shire Leisure Centres welcoming, inclusive and accessible places for everyone in our community.

From 21 October 2026, we’re introducing a 6-week trial of Sensory Quiet Time at Menai Indoor Sports Centre and Sutherland Leisure Centre.

Sensory Quiet Time will provide a calmer, lower-stimulation environment for customers who may benefit from reduced noise, lighting and other sensory activity, including people with sensory sensitivities, autism, ADHD, anxiety and other neurodiverse conditions.

When and where?

  • Menai Indoor Sports Centre
    Wednesdays, 11am–12pm
    Starting 21 October

  • Sutherland Leisure Centre, indoor facilities only
    Saturdays, 3pm–4pm
    Starting 24 October

What can you expect?

During Sensory Quiet Time, we’ll reduce sensory stimulation where practical by:

  • turning off background music
  • dimming lights where appropriate
  • limiting non-essential PA announcements
  • reducing operational noise where possible
  • turning off selected water features at Sutherland Leisure Centre
  • encouraging a calmer and quieter environment.

Our facilities will remain open to everyone during Sensory Quiet Time.

Shaped by community feedback

The trial follows strong support from our community, with 72% of survey respondents supporting the introduction of Sensory Quiet Time. More than half also told us that they, or someone they care for, could benefit from these sessions.

It’s a simple but meaningful step towards helping more people feel comfortable and confident participating in sport, recreation and leisure activities.

Tell us what you think

As this is a 6-week trial, we’d love to hear about your experience. Your feedback will help us understand what works well, what could be improved and how Sensory Quiet Time could be delivered in the future.
